Separated? How to get the most from your first meeting with your lawyer

Posted on November 20, 2020

The breakdown of a long term relationship or marriage is recognised as one of the most stressful things that someone can face.  The prospect of dividing property, selling or refinancing your home, dealing with investment properties or a family business and making arrangements for the care of your children can seem overwhelming.

So where to begin?

In our first telephone discussion, we provide you with advice about what information we will seek from you in our first meeting.  This gives you an opportunity to prepare the information that you need, to use the time in your first meeting most effectively.

Our goal is to provide you with a range of settlement at the earliest opportunity.  This gives you the opportunity to negotiate directly with your former partner to reach a resolution with a minimum of legal intervention, or alternatively we are able to negotiate with your former partner or their lawyer on your behalf.

Your agreement is reflected in Consent Orders, which protect both parties by finalising all financial matters and enabling you to move forward with your life.

If you have recently separated, and would like some advice about where to begin, contact our office for a no obligation 30 minute discussion in relation to your family law matter.
